Police confirmed at a news press conference Tuesday afternoon that Police received a call of a shooting in progress around 2:34 a.m. local time. Officers arrived to the 810 Billiards & Bowling Houston where there was a private party and found a dead man at the scene.
Two other people – a 23-year-old man and 24-year-old woman – were also injured in the shooting and took themselves to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, said Sgt. Michael Arrington with police department’s homicide division.
Finner said he did not want the shooting to reflect poorly on hip-hop."Sometimes the hip-hop community gets a bad name, "We all need to stand together and make sure nobody tears down that industry."
Finner identified the deceased man as Kirshnik Khari Ball, also known as Takeoff of the rap group Migos.“I got many calls from Houston and outside of Houston, and everyone spoke of what a great young man he is, how peaceful he is, what a great artist ,” later adding that Takeoff was very well respected and nonviolent.
Finner said the investigation is continuing to determine how the argument started, but they currently do not believe Takeoff was involved. "We have no reason to believe that he was involved in anything criminal at the time,"
At a news conference Tuesday afternoon, Finner said "at least two" guns were fired in the incident.they believe at least 40 people were on the scene at the time of the shooting, and are asking more people to share any information they have. "Someone knows exactly who it was, and I'm really sure someone is going to step up,"
Sgt. Michael Arrington said. “There was a large group of people that had gathered in the front gate area, just outside the building,” “ an incident that occurred after the party was over,”
"The only thing that we can do is hope that y'all reach out and assist us in any way to lead to evidence that will help us apprehend and get charges and an arrest of the person responsible for the death of Takeoff," Arrington said.
Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said they have met with Takeoff’s mother.“It doesn’t matter how famous you are. You may not be famous at all,” Turner said. “Anybody who loses his or her life is a life lost, and there are family members and friends who are grieving as a result.”
He added he hopes the case is solved sooner rather than later. “So you don’t have others out there trying to solve it for themselves," Turner said
